Many times I will be speaking to new clients, getting them ready for the process of having a website designed and quite a few are very surprised to learn that there are more steps involved besides simply registering a domain name. I wanted to include this small, simplified list of steps and common terms that one would run into during the web design process. Assuming you wished to have a website created, these steps (in most cases) would be part of the process, although most can and should be taken care of by your designer.
1. Choose a domain name.
2. Perform a "who is" search to see if domain name is available.
3. Register domain name through a REGISTRAR company...
(A REGISTRAR is a company that sells Internet domain names. Examples include; Network Solutions, GoDaddy, DreamHost, TuCows, BulkRegister, etc.) REGISTRARS register your domain name with a...
DOMAIN NAME REGISTRY (a DOMAIN NAME REGISTRY is a database which keeps track of which domain name matches which numerical IP address in the...
DOMAIN NAME SYSTEM on the Internet (a DOMAIN NAME SYSTEM [or DOMAIN NAME SERVER] assigns [among other things] a numerical IP address to each domain name. IP addresses are always expressed as four sets of three digit numbers.
4. Find a WEB HOSTING SERVICE (a WEB HOSTING SERVICE is a type of Internet hosting service that provides individuals, organizations and users with online systems for storing information, images, video, or any content accessible via the Web. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server [computer where website data is stored] they own for use by their clients). Examples include DreamHost, one of the businesses Shadowbend Studios partners with for web hosting services.
5. Find a Web designer who will create your website and then upload it to one of the servers provided by the WEB HOSTING SERVICE so that it can be accessed by visitors on the Internet.
It's important to note that nowadays, a single company, such as Shadowbend Studios can arrange domain registration as well as web hosting and site design/development so it's always a good idea to locate a professional hosting company or web designer and get their advice before choosing and registering your domain name.
